Plan your small business

For a shop, craft business or processing activity, understand how money moves through the business and what keeps it running.

  1. 01

    Separate household and business

Record money taken for the household as a business withdrawal. Sales are not all profit: stock and other running costs still need to be paid.

  2. 02

    Track purchases and sales

Keep a simple record of stock purchases, sales, amounts customers owe and payments due to suppliers. Notice stock that remains unsold for a long time.

  3. 03

Define what the funding will do

Buying stock is different from buying equipment used over several years. Record the price and when each purchase can begin generating receipts.

  4. 04

    Test a quieter month

Check whether rent, wages and other regular bills can be paid during a quieter month. Any loan repayments also need a place in that plan.
